Hundreds packed Ward Village Shops today as the center held the grand opening for T.J. Maxx.
T.J. Maxx opened its doors at 8 a.m. after a blessing. The 35,000 square-foot department store is located on the third floor of the recently built parking structure on Auahi Street, near P.F. Chang’s China Bistro. It’s the first T.J. Maxx in Hawai‘i in 16 years and the 1,001st in the nation.
By 2 p.m., the parking structure was nearly full and security and police were there to direct the flow of incoming cars.
The Mainland-based chain is known best for selling designer and brand name items for up to 60 percent less than department store prices. There were a variety of brands at the store, such as Coach, Gucci, and Calvin Klein.
T.J. Maxx customers – “Maxxinistas,” as they’re called – squeezed past crowds in and out of the aisles to see what deals the store had to offer. Maxxinistas filled their carts with a variety of items like clothing, kitchenware, shoes, beauty products and home decor. A small green sofa, which would sell for $195 at other department stores, had a price tag of $99. In addition, customers had to wait patiently to make their purchases as lines for the cashier weaved all through the store.
The department store chain is the first of three O‘ahu locations set to open this month. T.J. Maxx will open in Pearl City Gateway on May 10 and in Pearlridge Center May 17.
