Grab your running shoes and your glow sticks, because the countdown is on for the inaugural Ward Village NiteRun, kicking off September 20. The NiteRun is a 5k fun run that will raise funds and awareness for JDRF Hawai’i, who works to improves the lives of Hawai’i’s children, adults and families living with type 1 diabetes. You’re invited to partake in this family-friendly event, which will include donning headlamps and running or walking while taking in the sights of the dynamic neighborhood by foot.
“We’re excited to welcome the community to join us for our first ever Ward Village NiteRun, an event that truly epitomizes the fun and active lifestyle this neighborhood promotes,” said Katie Ka’anapu, Senior Marketing Manager of Ward Village. “We look forward to welcoming walkers and runners to Ward Village for this special evening under the stars while supporting diabetes research in Hawai’i.”
The Ward Village NiteRun is open to all ages and is an untimed event which will start and finish at Kewalo Basin Harbor. The end of the race will feature a glow-in-the-dark street party with LED entertainment, food and beverages and live music by local musicians, including Paul Izak, Erika Elona, local jazz funk favorites The Deadbeats, Jerome James and Roothub and more. Festivities will include a costume contest with prizes, giveaways from Ward Village retailers and restaurants, and a selfie-wall (yes, you read it right, a selfie-wall) complete with props to share the fun.
“The Ward Village NiteRun provides a unique and easy way for our community to join us in honoring the courage and perseverance of those facing the everyday challenges of type 1 diabetes,” said Stacy Acma, executive director of JDRF Hawai’i. “Local partners such as Ward Village are critical to the progress in type 1 diabetes research, and we thank them for their support as we work to turn Type One into Type None.”
NiteRun was started in 2013 as a part of John Henderson’s Adventure Race Hawai’i, with the goal of creating an event that provides a fun and safe environment to promote health and well-being with a splash of adventure. Henderson and Race Director Chris Gardner have more than 35 years of combined experience directing races and other athletic events throughout Hawai’i.
