It’s no secret that food trends come and go, from cupcakes to cronuts and beyond people love trying the latest and greatest treats. Acai has been one of those amazing treats that has gone from trend to a local staple here in the islands. That delicious Brazilian berry often mixed with fruits, granola, and honey keeps people coming back bowl after bowl. Nalu, in Kailua, is by far one of my favorite places for Acai but unfortunately for my self, being a towny, it’s so far. So you can imagine my delight when I heard that Nalu is not just moving to town, but coming into my neighborhood of Kakaako.

Nalu offers more than just Acai bowls, with salads, sandwiches, and smoothies also on the menu. The common theme is super healthy and amazingly delicious food that will keep you coming back for more.

The four friends that started Nalu all hail from Brazil and wanted to show the locals of Hawaii how Acai is served in their home country. Speaking to Chris, one of the owners of Nalu she says, “We import our Acai from Brazil. It’s organic, pure, and considered grade-A. We mix our Acai with Guarana Berry Syrup, also imported from Brazil, and bananas, making it the authentic Brazilian recipe. If you ever go to Brazil it will taste just like ours! Here in Hawaii people make Acai bowls differently, they add a lot of frozen mixed berries, apple juice or soymilk, therefore the Acai content is relatively small. In our blend there’s a very large amount of Acai, you can see on the deep dark purple color (which is the real Acai color), so it’s very healthy and loaded with antioxidant!”

Ala Moana Beach Park: The full makeover

With the Kakaako-Ala Moana area quickly transforming into a luxury-condo landscape, the city is now ready to dig its shovels into Ala Moana Beach Park for a much-needed makeover. Whether to surf, jog, or just enjoy the beach, the park has served as a gathering place for tourists and locals alike for the last 82 years and draws more than 4 million visitors per year.

In April, the City and County of Honolulu released its master plan to revitalize the Park with a final plan expected this fall. If the plan is approved, construction is slated to begin in 2017 with smaller projects to be rolled out over the next 10 years.

Ala Moana Beach ParkThe community action plan aims to make the park safer, offer local favorites at the concession stands, and add a new playground. The city would almost like to plant more street trees, fix rocky beach areas, renovate the comfort station, repair the Magic Island exercise path, and hire additional park staffers.

Ala Moana Beach Park

Other specific proposed park changes include enhanced pond edges and paths, extending the park area over the drainage channel, a new Piikoi entry plaza, renovating the McCoy Pavilion, increased irrigation, paths and trees at the Great Lawn, an improved “high spot” terrace, reconfigured free parking with no loss of stalls, a modified park drive with an added bike lane, and long-term beach nourishment.

If approved and implemented, these changes to Ala Moana Beach Park will make the Kakaako-Ala Moana neighborhood an even more desirable place to live. Boosting property value in the surrounding areas.

Symphony Honolulu

Symphony Honolulu initially started sales in the early summer of 2013 with more than half of all market units contracted within a few months. Roughly three years later, anxious buyers are visiting their units, doing final walk thru’s, and making final arrangements before moving in. The 388 unit mixed-use building, developed by Oliver McMillan, will be anchored on the ground floor by a luxury car dealership called Velocity. Located at the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard, Symphony Honolulu features expansive ocean views with nearly unobstructed mountain views.

With most Oliver McMillan projects, amenities are always a vital selling point as the developer tends to spare no expense when it comes to outdoor spaces and entertainment. Pacifica Honolulu, another Kakaako project joint developed by McMillan, has seen prices sky rocket since the launch of sales with all the great amenities and beautifully manicured recreation deck drawing many buyers young and old. Symphony Honolulu has been able to accomplish getting every amenity one could want into the building, while keep maintenance fees low. At 66 cents a square foot you’re on the low end compared to most of the Kakaako neighborhood.

Amenities include Bbq area, Exercise room, heated pool, sauna, whirpool, trash chute, dog park, media room and much more. Some the unit features include floor to ceiling windows, Studio Becker cabinets, engineered hardwood floors, central AC, stainless steel Bosch appliances, full-size washer dryer and more.

If you’re thinking about moving into urban Honolulu, you should certainly consider Symphony Honolulu. Resales from investor purchased units should be coming on the market soon, contact me if you would like to be put on the list of interested buyers. Mahalo!

Inside Arvo: Kakaako’s hippest coffee shop

Afternoon Mates! or rather, Arvo Mates!

Arvo Kakaako

Nestled in Kaka’ako, you will find a quaint and homey café that is sure to satisfy your coffee and toast cravings. Started by sisters Casey Wiggins and Dixie Rose, and Dixie’s husband Mason Rose, Arvo is an Australian inspired café focusing on coffee and Aussie-style food.

Arvo offers reasonably priced options from simple Vegemite Toast to their Loaded Avocado Toast — anything you order is guaranteed to satisfy your tastebuds.

What is the difference between a Flat White and Latte? Well, they are basically the same thing. A Flat White, originating from the land down under, has more microfoam and less volume than a Latte. Flat Whites are wonderful but Arvo makes both so, if you like more foam then feel free to order a Latte.

Arvo Kakaako

The Loaded Avocado Toast was suggested by one of the Baristas; Rye Bread loaded with Avocado Spread, Rocket (Arugula), Feta Cheese, and Tomato with a lemon on the side. It did not disappoint, delicious and healthy for breakfast or lunch!

The Matcha Pudding — filled with Matcha Chia Seeds, Matcha Whipped Cream, Strawberries, Blueberries, Bananas, and Kiwis. This will satisfy any sweet tooth and will definitely fill you up! Fun Fact: You can eat the flower too!

My personal favorite — Smoked Salmon Toast; Fennel Rye topped with Cream Cheese, Spinach, Smoked Salmon, Capers, Red Onions, and Lemon. Arvo’s fancy play on Bagels and Lox is a fresh and delicious lunch time snack.

So, if you’re down in the Kaka’ako neighborhood looking for a quick bite to eat or having a hankering for coffee, stop by Arvo. They are open Monday – Friday 7:30 – 3:00 and Weekends 8:30 – 2:00 — located at 675 Auahi Street inside Paiko.

A large master-bedroom with double vanity master bath and walk-in closet. Along with two kids/guest bedrooms with a shared bathroom, washer and dryer are also located on this level. Level-4, my personal favorite, offers 560 square feet of private rooftop terrace. Wood decking and an open trellis makes for perfect stargazing over the skies of Kakaako. Electrical stubouts make for easy installation of barbecue grills or your very own hot tub.

Ke Kilohana at Ward Village

Are you a first-time home buyer? Do you make less than $85,000 a year? Are you a Hawaii resident?

If you’ve just answered yes, yes, and yes, you might just be eligible for a reserve housing unit at Ward Village’s Ke Kilohana. Ke Kilohana is a new mixed-use residential/commercial project coming up in the heart of Ward Village, across the street from the future Kakaako rail station. The project located at the corner of Ward avenue and Halekauwila street will consist of 375 reserve housing units and 49 market units. The residential condo tower will reach 400 feet high for a total of 44 stories, 37 of which will be for residences and 7 stories of parking with an amenity deck on the 8th floor. Based on the current building design there will be an estimated 141 one-, 193 two-, and 90 three- or more- bedroom units.

A unique feature of Ke Kilohana is it’s sky lanais. Imagine entertaining friends or throwing a dinner party 30 floors up looking out over Kakaako and the pacific ocean. The sky lanais are an amenity just for you and will be the perfect place to escape and get some fresh air.

For me personally, the best thing about Ke Kilohana, beyond the amazing location and great amenities, is the price. Units will start in the low $300,000’s and go up to the $500,000’s. If you’ve been looking at what other units in the Kakaako area have been selling at lately you’ll know that this is an incredible deal. Floor plans have yet to be released and exact pricing most likely won’t come out until right before sales launch, if you let me know you’re interested I can make sure you get everything when more information is made available.

There is a fine balance between falling under the reserve housing requirements while still qualifying for the monthly payments. Contact me below to figure out if you qualify. or register your interest below.

Project Update

After the initial launch of sales, the project sold out in about four days. With roughly 900 buyers entering the lottery, more than 500 went on the waiting list. With this project and many like it, luck was a huge factor. Being prepared with all the proper documentation and getting pre-approved early also helps in the process. Kapiolani Residence, another housing project very similar to Ke Kilohana will be launching soon. Click here to learn more!

Pacifica Honolulu: Video Tour

Pacifica Honolulu has got to be one of my favorites of the existing Kakaako projects. Built in 2009, Pacifica is six years young, and is known for the amazing sushi restaurant Doraku located on the bottom floor. A great offering of amenities is also why buyers fall in love with Pacifica featuring two movie theaters, a pool, jacuzzi, private saunas for men and women, a great exercise room, and some of the best bbq/entertainment areas in all of Kakaako. But what I feel really separates Pacifica from the rest is that the amenity deck is meticulously landscaped, covered with an array of green foliage, making it seem like you’re in someones backyard rather than steps away from Kapiolani boulevard. For me the amenity deck provides a momentary escape from the hustle and bustle of urban living.

Pacifica Honolulu Amenity Deck

Pacifica offers 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units with many different floor plans to choose from. Ocean views are on offer from the makai side of the building, but I personally prefer the mountain or mauka side of the building. It’s much cooler in the afternoons and the city/mountain views are much more interesting to me. You’ll also save on your electricity bill because the afternoon sun can warm your unit a few degrees in the afternoons.

Pacifica Honolulu Pool

Chef Chai’s is another great restaurant located on the bottom floor of the building along with a great coffee/juice bar that I personally frequent, Bluetree. Pacifica offers close proximity to Ala Moana Center, a short walk to Ala Moana Beach Park, and quick access to Kakaako’s future Whole Foods Market

Here is a video that was produced for the real estate team. It features unit #4006 which is an ocean facing unit on the 40th floor. It’s a one-bedroom one-bath unit with 661 square feet of living. Let me know what you think in the comment section at the bottom of the page after you watch. If you would like to setup a showing for this unit or would like more information please email me at
