Nuuanu, sometimes called Nuuanu Pali, is a section of a mountain based at the top of Nuuanu Valley in O’ahu. Pali is a Hawaiian word that means “cliff.” In 1795, King Kamehameha I fought a battle here, and his enemies were driven off a cliff. Legend says that on some nights, their screams can still be heard. Homeowners in Nuuanu don’t let the legend scare them because they like the community’s warm weather and low crime rate.
Nuuanu isn’t just a landmark; it’s also a lookout point famous among homeowners and visitors. Climb on top of it, and you’ll be able to see the cities of Kailua and Kaneohe and the Pacific Ocean. This location is also famous for being very windy, so it’s best not to wear loose hats or other loose items. Another outdoor activity you can engage in is fishing at the Nuuanu Reservoir. The water holds many species of peacock bass and catfish. Just make sure to make an appointment and obtain an entry card and license prior to fishing there. Do you love hiking? Then, you’ll love to hike on Nuuanu Trail, a five-mile long trail with a river. You can also use this trail for a camping trip or bird watching. Spend the day together with family at Nuuanu Valley Park. It’s near a stream and it has tennis courts and a playground. Nuuanu offers two schools: Queen Emma Preschool and Nuuanu Elementary School, a good thing to know if you have young children.
The real estate properties in Nuuanu are mostly made up of townhouses and single family homes. Many of these residences have an average of three to five bedrooms, and several of them were built during the mid-20th century. A few downsides to Nuuanu is that it’s far from basic amenities and the cost of living isn’t cheap. Don’t let that deter you, especially if its cost of living isn’t a problem for you. Buying a home here means that you’ll be living in a dwelling with great home market value and you’ll be surrounded by lots of trails, nature and open space, features that sound nice to any outdoors enthusiast.
